As if COVID and air pollution were not bad enough, Delhi is struggling with another issue. Yes, we are talking about the toxic foam that has been spotted in the Yamuna river. As per a report in ANI, the foam is covering large parts of the river and it does not look pretty.
As early as November 12, a thick foam formed and it was a result of the release of toxic pollutants into the water. The foam is caused due to waste being dumped.?
BS Rawat, a local said that in the initial days of the COVID lockdown, the water was clean. But now, it is dirty.?
"The government is doing its own course but we as a citizen should also take steps to combat the situation. People should not throw the dirt into the river. It seems like sewage is flowing into the river, we need to stop it," he said.?
?This just shows how bad things have gotten in the last 2 months. With the lockdown eased up, the river is feeling the ill-effects of normalcy resuming. Back in September, the condition was not as bad.?
The way things are going it is bound to get worse. Proper waste management needs to be implemented if we are to protect one of India's major rivers from becoming permanently contaminated.??
