The rivalry between two of the most notorious gangs in Delhi-NCR, the Gogi and Tillu gang, took?another deadly turn on Tuesday after Tillu Tajpuriya was stabbed to death inside the Tihar Jail.
Four men who were also lodged in the Tihar jail and were members of the Jitender Gogi gang carried out the shocking murder in the early hours of Tuesday.
According to the police, the assailants used bed sheets to climb down to the ground-floor ward from the first floor and stabbed Sunil Baliyan, aka Tillu Tajpuriya, with an improvised 'sua' (weapon resembling an awl) more than 90 times.
When Tajpuriya saw the attackers, he ran to the cell of a fellow inmate named Rohit, who tried to save him by closing the gate of his cell. However, the cell could not be locked from the inside, and the assailants barged into the cell.
The murder was in retaliation to the killing of Jitender Maan alias 'Gogi',?one of the most notorious gangsters in Delhi, who was shot dead inside the Rohini Court in September 2021 by members of the Tillu gang.
33-year-old Tajpuriya, who was lodged in the Rohini Jail, was recently shifted to Tihar and was scheduled to be sent back soon.
"Tajpuriya was shifted to Tihar from Rohini jail a fortnight ago, and he was supposed to go back in the next five days," a senior police official said.
Following the killing of Gogi, Tajpuriya was a marked man and prison authorities said members of notorious gangs are routinely shifted from one prison to another to prevent such incidents.
"We keep shifting the members of these gangs if there is a threat quotient. These are the regular exercises that are supposed to be done every three months," the official said.
After the death of Gogi, the gang had also suffered another major setback as its new leader, Deepak Pahal alias Deepak Boxer was recently arrested and extradited from Mexico.
While it is still unclear how the murder was planned, in a surprise move, fugitive gangster Goldy Brar, an accused in the Sidhu Moose Wala, has claimed responsibility for the attack on Tajpuria.
Goldy Brar, whose real name is Satinder Singh Brar, is a close confidant of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who was close to Jitender Gogi.
"Hello everyone, our brothers Yogesh Tunda and Deepak Titar are responsible for the murder of Tillu Tajpuria in Tihar Jail on Tuesday. Tajpuria took responsibility for the loss of Gogi Maan bhai and had been an enemy of our brothers since the beginning. We will soon take care of others involved," the Facebook post read.
Tajpuria was the second inmate to be killed inside the Tihar jail within a month.
In April, Prince Tewatia, a Lawrance Bishnoi gang member, was killed in a gang war inside Tihar Jail. Tewatia, who was lodged in Jail Number 3, was stabbed five to seven times before he succumbed to his injuries in Delhi's Deen Dayal Hospital.
