As the summer starts showing its true colours, life is becoming difficult for people in many states across India due to the heat waves. While those staying indoors and working from offices may not be affected much, others who have to step out into the sun are not so lucky.
Traffic Policemen are among those who have to endure the scorching sun, no matter how hot it is outside.
Luckily for the traffic policemen in Gujarat's Vadodara, they have AC helmets to keep them cool in the summer heat.
These air-conditioned helmets were developed by students of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Vadodara.
¡°These have been given to personnel deployed during daytime on roads. It is battery operated helmet which helps in maintaining the body temperature. 450 personnel have been given this helmet,¡± said the police.
This is not the first time AC helmets have been distributed to traffic cops in Gujarat.
In 2023, the Ahmedabad Traffic Police had introduced similar AC helmets to its personnel during the summer months.?
These plastic helmets were equipped with a built-in fan-like structure, powered by a battery pack comfortably worn by the traffic police personnel around their waist. The helmets were designed to operate for up to 8 hours on a single full charge.
Earlier this month the the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted a possible heatwave in multiple states from April to June.
According to the IMD, the most prone areas to increased heatwaves were Gujarat, Maharashtra, North Karnataka, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, North Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
The Met office said above-normal maximum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country in April, with a high probability over central south India.
Normal to below-normal maximum temperatures are likely over some parts of the western Himalayan region and northeastern states in April, the IMD said.
Above-normal heatwave days are likely over many areas in central India and the adjoining areas of the northern plains and south India in April, it said.
"Two to eight days of heat wave are expected in these regions against a normal of one to three days," Mohapatra said.
