Karnataka's capital Bengaluru held onto its 'reputation' as India's most traffic-congested city for yet another year in 2023.
According to the annual TomTom Traffic Index, Bengaluru, Pune, New Delhi and Mumbai were the Indian cities with the most slow-moving traffic in 2023.
While Bengaluru's status as India's most traffic-congested city remained unchanged in 2023, the Silicon Valley of India dropped four positions in the global rankings.
Bengaluru which was ranked second in the TomTom Traffic Index 2022, improved its position to sixth in 2023.
London, Dublin, Toronto, Milan and Lima were the top five most traffic-congested cities in the world in 2023. Bengaluru at the sixth position and Pune at seventh were the only two Indian cities in the top ten in 2023.
National capital New Delhi was placed 44 globally, while Mumbai was at 54 in the list that ranked 387 cities across 55 countries on 6 continents in 2023.
According to TomTom, it takes 29 minutes and 20 seconds to cover a distance of 10km in Bengaluru, but compared to 2022, the average travel time decreased by 1 minute.
It further noted that residents spent an average of 257 hours a year driving in Bengaluru and 132 hours were lost due to congestion.
The worst day for travel in Bengaluru in 2023 was identified as September 27, with an average travel time of 32 minutes and 50 seconds to cover 10 kilometers. The busiest hour in Bengaluru was on Fridays, from 6 pm to 7 pm, when it took an average of 36 minutes and 20 seconds to drive a distance of 10km.
In Pune, the average time it took to cover the distance of 10 km in 2023 was 29 minutes and 41 seconds, which was an increase of 30 seconds from 2022.
In Delhi, it took 21 minutes and 49 seconds to travel 10km, which is 30 seconds less than the time it took in 2022. An average driver in Delhi lost 81 hours in 2023 due to traffic congestion.
In Mumbai, the travel time to cover a distance of 10km increased by 10 seconds from 2022 to 21 minutes and 20 seconds.
