A former under-19 cricketer has been arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly duping the Taj Hotel in the national capital to around Rs 5.5 lakh in unpaid bills over his stay there.
The accused, Mrinank Singh, a resident of Faridabad who claims to have represented Haryana at the under-19 level was arrested on Monday from the Delhi Airport, while he was attempting to fly to Hong Kong.
The 25-year-old was arrested based on a complaint filed by the director of security, Taj Palace Hotel alleging that Singh had failed to clear his dues of Rs 5,53,362 (Rs 5.53 lakh) bill from his stay there in July 2022.
Singh who posed as an IPL cricketer who played for the Mumbai Indians from 2014 to 2018 told the hotel that his sponsor, Adidas would be paying the bill.
But when the payment did not happen, the Hotel contacted Singh, who showed them the ID of a transaction worth Rs 200,000 lakh, but it turned out to be fake.
Later Singh told the hotel that he would send his driver with the cash but, this also did not happen.
Following this a case under Section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code was registered at Chanakyapuri police station.
During the investigation, it came to light that Singh, a Commerce graduate from Delhi University's Hindu College was earlier arrested by the Mumbai and Panchkula police for duping people.
Even when he was arrested on Monday from the Delhi Airport, Singh tried to get away by influencing the investigating officers pretending to be a senior IPS officer.
Singh reportedly called senior police officials, pretending to be Alok Kumar, Additional Director General of Karnataka Police, and sought help to assist his son Mrinank Singh who has been illegally detained at the Delhi airport.
Later during the interrogation, Singh admitted that he duped multiple luxury resorts and hotels of lakhs of rupees by posing as a cricketer for an IPL team.
Police also found he had duped multiple victims including Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant of Rs 1.63 crore in 2020-2021.?
