Some students believed writing 'Jai Shree Ram' on their answer sheets would help them pass, taking the saying 'Ram Naam Satya Hai' quite seriously. Shockingly enough, it actually did help them pass.
First-year students at a university in Uttar Pradesh decided to adorn their answer sheets with expressions like "Jai Shree Ram" and the names of cricket players instead of academic content.?
Even more astonishing is the revelation that these unconventional actions somehow led to their passing the exam.
But how did this unusual situation come to light??
Divyanshu Singh, a former student of Jaunpur's Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University, took a bold step by filing a Right to Information (RTI) request on August 3, 2023.?
In his request, he sought a re-evaluation of the answer sheets belonging to 18 first-year pharmacy students at the university, providing their roll numbers as reference.
Singh's actions were fueled by allegations against two professors at the university, namely Ashish Gupta and Vinay Verma. He accused them of accepting bribes to ensure the passing grades of these students.?
To strengthen his case, Singh not only filed a complaint but also supported it with a sworn affidavit, presenting compelling evidence to the state Governor.
Vice-Chancellor Vandana Singh informed NDTV, "There was an allegation that students have been given more marks. So we constituted a committee. That Committee in its report said that students have been awarded more marks."
Following the submission of the student's affidavit and complaint letter, Raj Bhavan initiated an investigation into the matter on December 21. In response, the university administration formed an inquiry committee.
The scrutiny committee conducted an external assessment of the answer sheets, which uncovered discrepancies, with some students receiving either 0 or 4 marks.?
Evidence revealed that along with writing "Jai Shree Ram," students had also penned down the names of cricketers such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Hardik Pandya on their answer sheets.?
Surprisingly, these students were awarded over 50 percent marks or granted passing grades.
During a subsequent examination committee meeting held on Wednesday, both Verma and Gupta were suspended.
