A woman from Uttar Pradesh allegedly got married to her sister's husband at a mass wedding ceremony in Jhansi.
According to reports, the woman staged the marriage with the knowledge of her family after the man whom she was originally supposed to tie the knot to did not show up at the wedding venue.
Despite this, the woman, identified as Khushi took part in the mass wedding and completed the ritual, with her brother-in-law as her 'husband'.
A total of 132 couples got married at the mass wedding held on Tuesday.
According to officials, the woman staged the marriage to get the benefits of the Chief Minister's Mass Marriage scheme.
Under the CM's Mass Marriage scheme, Rs. 51,000 is given to the couple, out of which Rs 35,000 is sent to the bride's bank account. Rs 10,000 is given to be used for gifts to the couple and Rs 6,000 for arranging the ceremony.
After the incident came to light, District Social Welfare Officer Lalita Yadav said that a probe has been ordered into the matter and action will be taken against those found guilty.
Before weddings are held under the scheme, Aadhaar cards are matched and other particulars are verified, but in this case, there was a lapse, she said.
All gifts and other materials given to Khushi's family have been taken back, officials said.
This is not the first time people have been caught faking marriages in UP to claim the rewards of the government scheme.
Earlier this month, a video had gone viral on social media showing a mass wedding in which many 'brides' were seen garlanding themselves, and hand no groom.
After the video went viral, an investigation revealed that the mass wedding was at Maniyar Inter College Balia district on January 25.
Around 568 couples got married at the event in which the local MAL was the chief guest.
Later, it turned out that at least 200 of the couples were paid sums ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 2,000 to act as brides and grooms, by some officials to swindle the money meant for the beneficiaries.
