The Kanpur police has invoked the Gangsters Act against 30 aides of slain gangster Vikas Dubey in connection with the encounter that killed eight policemen in June.
Kanpur's Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Preetinder Singh said on Saturday that the Gangsters Act has been slapped against the 30 accused.
A separate FIR under the relevant sections of the Gangsters Act has been lodged against the jailed accused, the DIG added.
Under the Gangsters Act, a district magistrate can order attachment of a property, whether movable or immovable, if there is a reason to believe that it was acquired by a gangster as commission for an offence triable under the Act, the DIG said.?
Eight policemen, including Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Devendra Mishra, were ambushed in Bikru when they were going to arrest Dubey, a dreaded gangster, and fell to bullets fired from rooftops shortly after midnight on July 3.
Dubey who went underground following the encounter that went shock waves across the country managed to slip away from the police many times.
In the meantime, several of his close associates were either arrested or shot dead by the police.?
Dubey's run from the law ended on July 9, when he was arrested by the Madhya Pradesh Police in Ujjain.
Dubey who was reportedly scared of being killed in an encounter had surrendered before the police outside the Mahalak temple.
However, just two days later he was killed after the vehicle he was being brought to UP met with an accident.
Dubey allegedly tried to escape after attacking a policeman following which he was shot dead.
