Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is undoubtedly one of the most vocal and loudest supporters of the Republican candidate for the upcoming US Presidential elections, Donald Trump. Not a day goes by without Musk posting on his social media platform X about why Trump is good, Kamala Harris is bad, and why Americans should vote for the Republican candidate for the future of America.
The world's richest man has become the biggest cheerleader for Trump in 2024, which many see as a 360-degree turn for Musk, who had previously identified as politically moderate and has voted for Democratic candidates.
However, two recent reports claim that Musk had been silently funding conservative causes and Republican groups for years, before his public endorsement of Trump earlier this year.
According to Reuters, Musk has donated millions of dollars to Building America's Future since 2022. Building America's Future has been running advertisements and social media campaigns criticising the Biden administration on issues like immigration and progressive political platforms.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Musk had financed other pro-Republican groups as well. This includes more than $50m to fund anti-immigrant and anti-transgender advertisements by a group called Citizens for Sanity.
Musk reportedly funnelled the money through social welfare groups that are not required to disclose their donors, and he used Signal, an encrypted messaging app, to discuss the transactions, The Wall Street Journal reported.
In 2023, Musk also gave $10m to support the Florida governor, Ron DeSantis, during his race to become the presidential candidate of the Republican Party. In 2022, Musk had said that he would support DeSantis for President.
Once a progressive liberal, many believe that Musk's ideological shift, which started a few years ago, was the result of his fallout with his transgender daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson.
Born Xavier Musk, as one of Musk's eldest twins, Vivian came out as gay at the age of 16 and transgender at the age of 18 in 2022. Musk has blamed the "woke mindset virus" for 'killing his son.'
