A tragic incident occurred at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Nigeria, where Olabode Olawuyi, a longtime zookeeper responsible for caring for the animals, was fatally attacked by one of the lions he had raised since its birth. The university revealed that the attack took place while Olawuyi was feeding the lions.
Despite the efforts of his colleagues to intervene and rescue him, Olawuyi sustained fatal injuries from the lion's attack. But, he could not be saved. Following the incident, the lion involved in the attack was euthanised.??
Olawuyi, a veterinary technologist, had been "taking care of the lions since they were born on campus about nine years ago".?"But, tragically, the male lion killed the man who had been feeding them," the university's spokesman, Abiodun Olarewaju, said.?"We never knew what came over the male lion that it had to attack [him]," he added.
The loss of Olabode Olawuyi has deeply saddened the university community, and condolences have poured in for his family and loved ones. The university has expressed its grief over the tragic incident and is providing support to those affected by the loss.
The university's vice-chancellor, Prof Adebayo Simeon Bamire, said he was "saddened" by the incident and ordered a thorough investigation.
The students' union leader, Abbas Akinremi, told Nigeria's Vanguard newspaper that the attack was caused by "human error" after the zookeeper had forgotten to lock the door after feeding the lions.He described the incident as unfortunate, while paying tribute to Olawuyi as a "good and humble man, who attended to us nicely whenever we went to the zoo".
