Nokia, once the undisputed king of the mobile phone industry is set to be a thing of the past as HMD Global, which has been selling smartphones under the brand name since 2016 is set to drop it.
Finland-based Human Mobile Devices has decided to release new smartphones under its own brand -- HMD, which would mean that there will be no more Nokia Phones.
Last month an image had surfaced online showing what appears to be the first HMD-branded smartphone.
According to unconfirmed reports, the first HMD-branded device will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona from February 26 to 29, 2024.
HMD, which was founded in 2016 by mostly ex-Nokia employees had acquired rights to the brand after the company sold its mobile phone business to Microsoft in 2014.?
Microsoft also had the rights to use the Nokia brand for 10 years as part of the deal, but it dropped the name in favour of Lumia for its Windows phones.
This was widely seen as the end of the road for Nokia Phones, which in the 2000s had a one-third share of the global market.
At a time when it was believed that the mobile phone giant, of which millions had nostalgic memories was going to be a footnote in history, the brand got a second lease of life with HMD.
Nokia Corporation which shifted its focus to networking equipment licensed the brand to HMD, which soon started making both smartphones and feature phones, including recreating some of its most iconic products.
Despite the initial hype, HMD Global's Nokia-branded smartphones failed to live up to the expectations of customers. The new Nokia, smartphones that were running on the Android platform also could not compete with Chinese OEMs like Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi.
