Social media is abuzz with speculations of an alien invasion after an unexplained phenomenon was observed in the night sky in a Japanese town. The strange-looking 'pillars of light in the sky' were spotted by the residents of the coastal town of Daisen in Japan's Tottori on May 11. Images of the lights soon made it to social media, leaving people stunned and confused.
According to some eyewitnesses, there were a total of nine pillar-like lights in the sky, like a scene straight out of a sci-fi movie. Some speculated that the lights were signs from aliens, appearances of angels, or signals of an impending extraterrestrial invasion of our planet.

An eyewitness, Maashii, who took the first photo of the strange lights, told a local news site that he has witnessed these mythical-looking lights only three or four times since moving to Daisen nine years ago.
While social media was busy searching for aliens and UFOs, scientists had a more logical explanation. According to them, the pillars of light are not of extraterrestrial origin but natural. The phenomenon was a result of what is called 'Isaribi Kochu' in Japanese.
Isaribi Kochu is a natural light display that occurs predominantly in Japan's coastal areas. It happens when fishermen use bright lights, known as "isaribi," to attract fish during nighttime fishing. Under specific atmospheric conditions, such as the presence of ice crystals in the air, these lights reflect to create vertical light pillars, creating the pillar light effect in the sky.

According to Japan Today, ¡°isaribi,¡± which translates as ¡°fishing fires,¡± are lights utilized on fishing vessels to lure in larger catches, particularly in squid fishing. During cooler overnight temperatures, crystals may occasionally develop in the atmosphere above these illuminated fishing boats. Under specific conditions where significant crystals form without any precipitation, the light beams can manifest as a result of the boats¡¯ illumination reflecting off these crystals.
