The professional wrestling world has lost one of the greatest luchadors of all time with the passing of Rey Misterio Sr. The Mexican Lucha libre legend passed away at the age of 66.
Miguel ?ngel L¨®pez D¨ªaz, better known by his ring name, Rey Misterio, which means Mystery King, is credited with making Mexican wrestling what it is today.
Misterio Sr, who started wrestling in the 1970s, mostly performed in Mexico but also made a handful of appearances in the US, on WCW. A decorated champion who won several belts across his illustrious career, Misterio Sr had a much larger impact as a wrestling trainer.
Misterio Sr trained several future successful international wrestlers, including Konnan, Psicosis, The Warlord, his son El Hijo de Rey Misterio, and his nephew Rey Mysterio.
Among the next generation of masked wrestlers trained by Misterio Sr, none has created an impact like Rey, who also got his name and his signature mask from his uncle.
Misterio Jr, who started wrestling at the age of 14 in Mexico, made his way into the US through ECW.
But it was his stint at WCW from 1996 to 1998 that catapulted Misterio Jr to stardom. Rey's unorthodox, high-flying style helped Mexican wrestling become popular in the US. Rey also went on to become a multiple-time world champion in WWE, where he debuted as Rey Mysterio in 2002.
This is the second personal tragedy Rey Mysterio has suffered in recent times.
Last month, Rey Mysterio announced that his father, Roberto Guti¨¦rrez, had passed away.
