Former WWE champion Kofi Kingston returned to in-ring action after a brief hiatus on the January 20 episode of Monday Night Raw. Kingston, one-half of The New Day, faced Rey Mysterio in his first in-ring action after he and Xavier Woods turned their backs on Big E.
There was much drama at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas, on Raw as Mysterio, who made his way to the ring first, waited for his opponent.
As The New Day's entrance music hit, out came Kingston and Woods, who asked for it to be stopped. The duo then announced that they would no longer be using it.
Despite interference by Woods, Mysterio picked up the win, pinning Kingston.
The action did not end there, as Woods once again decided to get involved by knocking Mysterio from behind. Kingston also joined the beatdown until Joaquin Wilde and Cruz Del Toro ran down to the ring to aid Mysterio.
The WWE Hall of Famer had been at odds with The New Day since Woods and Kingston decided to turn their backs on an injured Big E on the 10th anniversary of The New Day.
The locker room leader, who expressed his displeasure over how the duo treated Big E, told them that the locker room had a problem with their actions as they had crossed a line. On an episode of Raw, Mysterio even denied Woods and Kingston a place to change, forcing them to leave the show.
