Artificial intelligence has wide-ranging applications in healthcare, especially in regards to early diagnosis of life-threatening diseases. Now, an AI tool has managed to detect 3,000 critical heart attacks in 12 Maharashtra districts.
ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) is a life-threatening heart attack that can be fished out by an AI-powered diagnostics tool that was launched by Maharashtra government in February 2021 to reduce fatalities from heart attacks - the leading cause of deaths in the state.
Since its launch, nearly 3,000 patients with severe heart attacks were diagnosed. Of these, 70% patients were male. STEMI puts patients of heart ailments at greater risk of complications and death. Timely diagnosis and treatment can prevent life-threatening situations.
Maharashtra government has created a "Hub and Spoke" model, wherein 145 health facilities?in rural hospitals, sub-district hospitals, and district hospitals with electrocardiogram (ECG) machines have been upgraded as spokes, The Indian Express reported. These spokes have been linked to 38 hubs with "cath lab facility."

Dr. Padmaja Jogewar, Joint Director (Non-Communicable Disease cell) of Directorate of Health Services, told The Indian Express that the turnaround time is 10 minutes, but "doctors usually respond within four minutes."
When patients are brought to a spoke, an ECG is conducted and the report then uploaded onto a cloud connected to hubs. It is then ascertained whether the personal had a heart attack or not.?So far, these ECG reports have helped identify 7,377 critical patients. Out of these, 2,722 patients suffered a serious STEMI heart attack.
