The last thing humanity needs is an asteroid impact. For now, Earth seems in the safe zone in terms of potential impacts, but that doesn't mean people's curiosities about such impacts can be kept under wraps.
A new app on the website Neal.fun shows what would happen to virtually any part of the planet if an asteroid struck it. The Asteroid Simulator was developed by Neal Agarwal to show the extreme local effects of asteroid impact.
To kick off mayhem, users need to pick their type of asteroid - iron, stone, carbon, gold, and even ice. The diameter for each asteroid can be tweaked up to 1.6 kilometres (a mile) and its speed can be anywhere between 1,600 to 402,336 kilometres per hour. Players can also set the impact angle up to 90 degrees.
Once you're ready to unleash madness, simply select a strike location on a global map. While trying out the simulator, I launched asteroids towards two Indian cities - New Delhi and Mumbai. In both instances, the damage was quite serious, with a serious of natural disasters and unprecedented loss of life. Various metrics of measurement include the size and effects of the fireball, shock wave, wind speed, and earthquake caused by the asteroid impact.

In essence, the simulator is a dire warning of what might happen in case Earth was unlucky enough to get struck by an asteroid in the future.
Thankfully, humans are developing technology at such an impressive scale that we might be able to dodge asteroids in the future. Recently, NASA changed the trajectory of an asteroid through its DART mission, setting the stage for real-life emergency use in the worst-case scenarios.
Currently, NASA is observing the orbit of 19,000 near-Earth asteroids. For now, no direct impact risk faces Earth but the universe is full of mysteries and humanity's best bet is to stay alarmed against such potentially devastating calamities.
