We know the importance of waste management and how segregation of waste can not only help in saving the planet but also make the work of garbage collection convenient.
However, many still don¡¯t separate waste -- either due to lack of knowledge or sheer negligence. But a 9-year-old boy has created an app that's trying to change that, by making proper waste management practices available for all.?
9-year-old Sean Solano Paul from Bengaluru has created an app called ¡®Trash Sorter¡¯. Created with the help of WhiteHat Jr, the app makes people learn about biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.
In case you didn¡¯t know biodegradable waste is something that can naturally decay with other living organisms -- like vegetable peel, paper etc. Non-biodegradable waste is one that cannot decay naturally and takes a long time to get degraded -- usually made of synthetic materials like plastic. The latter gets accumulated in dumping grounds and thus cause harm to the environment.?
One day on his way to school at the National Centre for Excellence, Bangalore, Sean saw the plight of municipality workers who were separating waste -- something that could have been simplified right from the people¡¯s homes. He was already learning coding with WhiteHat Jr -- a startup that is helping kids learn coding in cool and innovative methods. This is the same startup behind the 7-year-old Siddhant Nair¡¯s Tiffin Nutrition app.
The app is essentially a game that has two trash bins -- one safe for biodegradable waste and one for non-biodegradable waste. Around the trash can is different kinds of trash that the user needs to drop in the correct bin, and earning a score for the same.
The app might seem basic and rather bare-minimum -- but its the thought behind it that matters. Kids or even adults playing will learn what trash needs to go where -- thus inculcating the habit of waste segregation.
The app is available for free on Android through Google¡¯s Play Store.
