Google's "incognito mode" may just be incognito for its users, turns out. Owing to alleged claims that Google collects user data even for those operating within the incognito realm, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai may have to answer to a US court soon.
It began when users filed a case against Google for illegally tracking their internet usage while using Chrome browser's incognito mode. Now, a California judge could question Sundar Pichai for two hours to figure it if that's true.
The plaintiffs argue that Pichai has "unique, personal knowledge" about issues that are related to privacy at Google. Google spokesperson Jos¨¦ Casta?eda was quoted by Reuters as saying the following - "While we strongly dispute the claims, in this case, we have cooperated with plaintiffs' countless requests... We will continue to vigorously defend ourselves."

In 2019, Sundar Pichai was notified of the issue with Google Chrome's incognito mode - and how describing it as "private" is misleading. But a court filing suggests that Pichai did not want incognito mode "under the spotlight."
On Monday, a US magistrate referred to old filings about the issue and said that "specific relevant information was communicated to, and possibly from, Pichai."
Google's position is that the incognito mode only prevents data from being stored on a user's device. If we read between the lines, it sounds like Google knows that it's collecting data even during incognito mode.
