Spam is no longer limited to calls and messages on your cellular number and can become a nuisance on platforms like WhatsApp as well. Currently, any registered WhatsApp user can call another even if they're not registered as your contact.
To end the menace of spam, WhatsApp seems to be working on a feature that lets users silence unknown callers. According to WABetaInfo, the primary authority on all-things-WhatsApp that may be in development, the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android contains code for a feature that would allow users to silence calls from unknown numbers.
This feature is among many that are regularly spotted on the beta version and might or might not make it to users in the near-future.
A screenshot refers to the feature as "Silence unknown callers" in settings. If you enable the feature, all calls from unknown numbers would be silenced, the report states.
Just like regular calls on your device, the feature will only let you silence calls from unknown numbers - all those calls would still be visible in the list of calls received and in notifications, just in case a user needs to see where the call is coming from.

A basic functionality like silencing calls from unknown users should have made its way to WhatsApp a long time ago, but it's nice to see that they're toying with the scope of such tools that give more power to users to deal with spam calls.
For now, it's unclear if and when the feature might make its way to the official app, but it has been spotted on the Android beta version and should roll out to all users, including those on iOS, when it becomes official.
