While Android is the most flexible and easy to use operating system, some flavours on Android are known to show advertisements across its user interface, which does look really annoying. Apple has stayed away from such ads, providing a clean user experience, however, this might not be for long.
A new report on 9to5Mac reveals that Apple¡¯s App Store has revised its guidelines with respect to advertisements in push notifications. As per the revisions now apps can show ads and promotion on these push notifications -- this basically means that if an app pings next time on your iPhone, it could be the app showing you some promo that you clearly don¡¯t want to see.
This is quite different from Apple¡¯s original policy which didn¡¯t allow any app to use the notification as a medium to promote stuff at the cost of impacting user experience. However, many don¡¯t know that Apple has been accused in the past for sharing content similar to promotional material as notifications, revealing signs of anti-competitive practices.
While this might sound sad, and mostly it is, some e-commerce apps will now be able to notify their buyers of an upcoming sale or deals on things they¡¯re interested in purchasing, although that too will eventually get annoying.
However, amidst all this, there is a silver lining. Apple has still not taken control away from the smartphone user. Its polices state that they must include an option to opt-out of these promotional messages, should the user choose to. So if you don¡¯t want the annoying notifications, you can simply browse in the app¡¯s settings and turn off promo notifications to have an unaltered user experience.
