On January 7, 2019, special cab services for women were started at?the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. Called Pink Taxis, these are driven by the women and for the women to ensure the safety of female travellers.
Woman drivers are fluent in multiple languages, have knowledge of the local areas and are trained in self-defence. The cabs are also equipped with several safety measures including the GPRS tracking and SOS switch.
During the day (between 6 AM and 11:59 PM) the service will be charged Rs 21.50/km and at the night 23.50/km. The service will operate 24 hours.
¡°It has been implemented with the objective of providing a safe and secure mode of transport for women travellers from the airport, while simultaneously creating opportunities for women drivers to be self-employed and empowered,¡± said Mr Kumar Pushkar, Managing Director, KSTDC.
"At the airport, safety and security of women passengers are of prime concern. This is another step in our endeavour towards ensuring that women are 100 per cent safe and travel safely. The Pink Taxis will offer a sense of safety and a secure mode of transport to women of all ages," he added.??
The initiative also contributes to the development of women from villages around the airport and is a good initiative to empower them.
