After 96 years, historian Benson Lossing's book 'A Family History of the United States' was returned to the St. Helena Public Library. In 1927, it was checked out.
According to the Washington Post, Jim Perry returned the library?book he discovered while cleaning his Napa, California, house. "This is an old book that's been in our family for five generations," Mr. Perry remembers saying at the St. Helena Public Library's front desk.

"How incredible is this! Someone borrowed this book from our library 96 years ago. It just shows that it's never too late to return a library book," the St. Helena Public Library stated on Instagram. The returned book is Benson Lossing's A History of the United States. The book was borrowed on February 21, 1927, and returned in 2023.
"One of my staff members brought it, they came up and said, 'Oh, somebody had returned that book,' and they thought it was cool," Chris Kreiden, director of the Saint Helena library, told KSBW the news. It was an extremely old book, and we had no idea how old it was." "All of us are just, you know, wondering where the book could have been for so long, you know, from being checked out in 1927," she added to KSBW news. None of us have ever seen a library book checked out in 1892 or anything else. And to have it from this collection from so long ago is wonderful."
