Walchand Hirachand Doshi was a visionary entrepreneur and industrialist in India. On November 23, 1882, he was born in Solapur, a small village in Maharashtra.
Walchand Doshi matriculated from Solapur Government High School in 1899 and later earned a BA degree from the University of Mumbai.
After his graduation, he started his business career in his?father's family business of banking and cotton trades, but he realised he was not interested in the family business, so?Walchand left his family business and began his adventurous journey into the world of shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing, civil engineering, maritime shipping, and automobile manufacturing.

From there, he never looked back and laid the foundation of India¡¯s first Swadeshi shipping company, the Scindia Shipyard (rechristened as Hindustan Shipyard Limited when it was nationalized).
Doshi recognised the importance of the shipping sector for the growth of India¡¯s economy and set up a shipyard in Mumbai, which became the first in India. This yard went on to build ships for the Indian Navy and commercial vessels for Indian and international clients.
