What Was The Research Station Built For?

According to NRSCs official site, Bharati was built for receiving satellite data, “ISRO has established the Antarctica Ground Station for Earth Observation Satellites (AGEOS), at Bharati Station, Larsemann Hills, Antarctica, for receiving Indian Remote sensing Satellite (IRS) data.”

The state-of-the-art architecture was commissioned in 2013 and has been receiving data from IRS satellites and channelling them to NRSC, Shadnagar, near Hyderabad.

Back in 2022, the Lok Sabha signed a crucial bill in July. The Indian Antarctica Bill 2022 to assist in protecting and conserving the frozen continent. Alongside India, 29 other countries have over 70 research stations on the icy terrain.?

During the discussion on the bill, Union Minister of State for Earth Sciences, Jitendra Singh, said, “the main aim is to ensure de-militarisation of the (Antarctic) region along with getting rid of mining or illegal activities.”

Besides Bharati, Antarctica also has another Indian research station named Maitri which was commissioned in 1989.?
