Can you fathom standing for more than eight hours straight? What if your job requires you to do it? Will you be able to do so??
It appears that few people have no choice but to follow it. A woman spoke up about the same on Twitter and it has caught the internet's attention. Here's what she had to say.
Author Shobana Ravi took to Twitter to describe a young man she saw waiting under an escalator in a mall at 12 pm. Then she discovered that their working hours were from 12 pm. until 8.30 pm. She also saw that there was no seat for him to sit on.
Shobana emphasised how "cruel" it was to force someone to stand for 8 hours and 30 minutes. She then asked the management a question.?
She observed the young man standing beneath an escalator at Chennai Phoenix Mall since noon where his duty hours were from 12 noon to 8:30 pm. Surprisingly, no seat had been provided for him, leaving him to fidget and lean on the desk due to the discomfort from standing for such a long duration. The situation seemed "cruel" to her since expecting someone to remain on their feet for 8 hours and 30 minutes is unfair.
The woman who noticed this incident, while sipping tea nearby, questioned why the management did not provide a seat and treat these workers more decently. They wondered if the Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishments Act of 1947 mandated the provision of seats for workers who have to wait on customers for extended periods.?
Additionally, the concern raised by their friend, Mangalasundari Sarangarajan, regarding labourers working for deep-cleaning agencies was brought to everyone's attention. These workers lock themselves inside the toilets while they use acid to clean the washrooms, exposing themselves to hazardous fumes.?
The woman suggested that householders should insist on keeping the doors open during cleaning, and the agencies should provide the workers with appropriate protective gear. They urged the Tamil Nadu labour minister and commissioner to address these troubling working conditions faced by labourers. Here's what people wrote in the comments.
