A man from Gujarat is earning a lot of accolades after he ran for almost a kilometre to let a train driver know about the broken rail track he spotted.
30-year-old Rakesh Baria averted an accident?on the Delhi-Mumbai route, in the Dahod district of Gujarat.?This route falls under the?Ratlam division of the Western Railway.
Two days after the incident, the man was honoured by the Ratlam division railway officials with a cash reward of ? 5,000 and a citation.?After being honoured, Baria said that when he was grazing his goats, he saw a railway track broken at one place, after which he ran for a kilometre to raise an alarm, but did not see any railway employee there.
"Then I called my father and informed him about the broken railway track. He tried to contact some railway personnel over the phone, but failed to do so," he said.
After the advice of his father, Rakesh went to his home located nearby and returned to the track with a piece of red cloth. After this, he sat about two kilometres from the place of the broken track and started waving the red cloth on seeing a goods train. On seeing him, the loco pilot stopped the train by applying emergency brakes. After that, the work of repairing the rail track was launched, he said.
People on the internet lauded Rakesh for his brave act. But many questioned why he was only rewarded with?? 5,000 since it was a small price to save hundreds of people.?
The railway officials later mentioned that the tracks have been repaired. Over 125 trains - including passenger and goods trains pass on this route every day.?
