Prime Minister Narendra Modi first floated the idea of International Yoga Day during his speech at the UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014. 177 nations supported the draft resolution passed by India.
The word ¡®yoga¡¯, is derived from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolising the union of body and consciousness. Today it is practised in various forms around the world and continues to grow in popularity. Recognizing its universal appeal, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as International Yoga Day by resolution 69/131.
Tuesday, 21st June is celebrated as International Yoga Day all across the world. Even though this form of exercise originated in India over 5,000 years back, it has been adopted by almost every country around the world.
According to the Ministry of Ayush, it is expected that as many as 25 crores of people will participate in International Day of Yoga 2022 celebrations across the world.
