Do you recall Guy Pearce's portrayal of a man with short-term memory loss in the movie Memento? We also have the Memento remake, Ghajini, which is closer to home. Both films told the tragic story of a man who is unable to hold onto his memories for more than a few minutes.
Many find the sound of it incomprehensible, and picturing someone living such a life seems depressing. How would you react if we told you that a young girl has been living in this manner for the past four years? Here's her story:
Riley Horner, a college student from the US, suffered severe memory loss following a traumatic concussion, necessitating her brain's effective reset every two hours. Riley has been caught in a time loop since the accident on July 11, 2019, waking up every day believing it is still July 11, 2019.?
Riley was at a dance in Springfield, Illinois, on a fateful night when a man who was crowd surfing lost his balance and fell on her. Sarah, Riley's mother, claims that Riley had between 30 and 45 seizures shortly after leaving the hospital.??
The awful things that had happened the day before had vanished from the 16-year-old's memory as she awoke the next morning. She thought it was June 11 and had made plans to go to a dance that night. In the days that followed, she would recall that day every two hours.?
She would check her phone when she realised it wasn't the date and find a never-ending stream of updates in the Notes app, keeping her informed of everything that had happened since the accident.?
Riley's family searched for a doctor who could help with her unusual medical condition for a very long time. They eventually located a group in Utah that could diagnose Riley's condition after a series of tests.?
She had a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and a severe concussion that had gone unnoticed by earlier exams. Riley's ability to prioritise, concentrate, and store information had been hampered by TBI.She is currently receiving treatment at Cognitive FX, a Provo post-concussion treatment facility, and while her TBI has not yet been completely reversed, her memories now last for more than two hours.?
Riley still takes medication for her seizures and will probably never regain her former self, but she and her family are trying to celebrate the little victories, like finishing her first semester with a 4.0.?? ?
