We all remember the elephant that was mauled to death after it got hit by a train in West Bengal, while it was crossing the railway tracks. The death created a lot of outrage, and people questioned authorities' preparedness to avoid the human-animal conflict.?
Now, it seems, people are coming up with simple technological solutions to mitigate this human-elephant conflict.?
IFS Susanta Nanda shared the video of a local African news channel, which talks about how authorities in Tanzania are using drones to drive elephants away from human territory.
?
The drones produce sounds of bees or even lions which scare the elephants into the other direction. Reportedly, this technology is also being used in Tamil Nadu to keep elephants from crossing railway tracks when a train is running on them.?
The Hindu report from last year states that a single drone that weighs 3 kg comes at a price of Rs 5 lakh. Six drones were allotted to different places in Tamil Nadu. Two of them were allocated to Coimbatore, which had been witnessing growing number of incidents of human-elephant conflict; the results were reportedly promising.?
This is a simple technology that can easily avoid humans and elephants from getting hurt and authorities should consider employing it in other parts of the country as well, especially in West Bengal where the number of such incidents are reportedly high.?
