After more than five decades of looking for their lost daughter, a family in Texas finally located her, living a thousand miles away from them in South Carolina.?The unbelievable story recently surfaced after people online helped Melissa Highsmith get back to her roots and reunite with her family members after she was kidnapped as a 1-year-old toddler.??
The bizarre hunt was a result of a kidnapping that took place in Texas when Melissa¡¯s mother, Alta Apantenco, hired a babysitter through a published newspaper advertisement.?As Alta was a working mother, trying to raise her daughter on her own was becoming an impossible task. So, to help herself, she hired a babysitter in 1971. But the only mistake Alta made was that she hired a woman without ever meeting her in person.
While Alta was out, her roommate handed Melissa over to the babysitter, who, according to The Guardian, apparently abducted the little girl and never returned her. However, Melissa¡¯s family never let themselves forget their missing child, as they filed a report with the police and, for half a century, threw parties every November on her birthday.
They even started a Facebook page, named "Finding Melissa Highsmith." Through the page, the family received a tip back in September that Melissa was somewhere around Charleston. Following the anonymous tip, the family reunited with Melissa, who finally met her mother, her father, and two of her siblings.
Melissa¡¯s sister Victoria shared her agony, "I couldn¡¯t stop crying," she continued. "I was overjoyed, and I¡¯m still walking around in a fog, trying to comprehend that my sister [was] right in front of me and that we found her." The other sister, Sharon, revealed that finding Melissa was a mixture of using the TikTok-famous 23andMe DNA test and her own snooping around through the public records.
Sharon Highsmith also pointed out how the disappearance of Melissa had been especially hard for their mother. She not only lost her daughter but was also accused of murdering her lost child. Tracking Melissa became a triumph for the family and also gave vindication to her accused mother. Sharon expressed her anger, saying, "Our family has suffered at the hands of agencies who have mismanaged this case." She highlighted her family's future intentions: "Right now, we just want to get to know Melissa, welcome her to the family, and make up for 50 years?of lost time."
After their hunt for Melissa ended, the?family?issued an official statement. The statement reflected the pain they had endured while looking for their lost?daughter, which lasted for more than half a century: "Never give up. Chase every lead."
