While Abosch's portraits generally sell for half a million dollars, the shot of the potato caught the eye of a European businessman who bought it after seeing it at the artist's Paris residence.A spokeswoman for Abosch confirmed that the photograph was sold for one million euros, or $1,086,810 USD.
The shot was taken at Abosch's home in Dublin. Abosch owns a smaller edition of the print, and an even smaller one is on display at the Museum of Contemporary Art Novi Sad in Serbia, according to a spokesman for the artist.?
Abosch denied an interview with ABC News but stated in a statement that he uses potatoes "as a proxy for the ontological study of the human experience."?
"I see commonalities between humans and potatoes that speak to our relationship as individuals within a collective species," he went on to say. "Generally, the life of a harvested potato is violent and taken for granted."?
