Finding weird things in your home can be really unnerving. A woman was terrified when she spotted a dark, unidentified object in her kitchen. She was concerned about the slimy-looking thing, which she first mistook for a bit of string.?
When she peered closer, she noticed that it resembled a worm. She took to social media to ask others what they believed it was, and she was shocked by the responses.?
The Australian woman wrote on the Facebook group Mums Who Clean: "Anyone got any ideas what on earth this could be?" I initially assumed it was a string, then a black baby banana string." She said, "Now I'm concerned it's a worm. I have not attempted touching it yet."
Others in the comments attempted to assist the woman and determine what it could be, according to MailOnline.Someone speculated that it may be a "slug" if she had a pet that "brought it in with its fur".?
Another person said that it could be a "leech". Another person said: "It looks like a wet thread, it won't hurt if you poke it or touch it with anything" .?
Another social media user remarked, "If you live in Queensland, it could be a slowworm, they're harmless but still scare you". Most people assumed it was a flatworm and assured her there was nothing to worry about.
According to Bug Life, the UK has a few native flatworm species, however the most frequent are little (less than 3cm) and plain black or grey. Microplana keenfi, a local species, is yellow or pink and, unlike the Australian flatworm, has a cylindrical body. The Royal Horticultural Society advises that non-native plants might be harmful since they "eat earthworms, snails, and other soil organisms."?
According to the researchers, "they can severely reduce populations of some earthworm species and thus affect the soil ecosystem." They also stated that "all non-native flatworms fall under Schedule 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, which makes it an offense to introduce or release them into the wild."?
