Zomato, India's food delivery giant, has responded to criticism regarding the prevalence of questionable 'one-dish' restaurants on its website. The business stated that it had 'delisted' some of the fraudulent restaurants on its app who may have used the system to push 'prohibited items'. The introduction of dodgy postings on Zomato sparked various conspiracy theories among social media users, with some speculating that the eateries were a front for the drug trade and others claiming that Zomato was facilitating 'money laundering' activity.
Last week, social media users reported that such shady restaurants had opened in the northern Indian union territory of Chandigarh, providing a single dish at 'absurdly expensive pricing'.?
Some of the questionable restaurants had no ratings, while others were inundated with negative feedback, possibly to protect the business from people who merely wanted to purchase food.
As per an NDTV report, a Zomato spokesperson said, "We have identified all such restaurants that were potentially fraudulent and have delisted them from our platform. To solve this more comprehensively, we have also investigated all other restaurants which have a very limited menu on Zomato and might have listed prohibited items or worked around a way to list prohibited items."?
"As per our policy, all restaurants listed on Zomato need to have an FSSAI license and we also actively block items such as alcohol, cigarettes/cigars/vapes from being listed on our platform," they further added.
The restaurant aggregator claimed that the establishments were able to cheat Zomato's "checks by using generic food names such as, 'Naughty strawberry' and 'Merry Berry'".
