On a recent episode of Shark Tank India season three, judges and viewers got to see a unique business idea-a portable wedding hall. It has been set up by a former vada pav businessman from Latur, Maharashtra, who is into mandap decoration business.
Dayanand Darekar, who runs portable wedding hall "Chalte Firte Mangal Karyalay" with his wife Sangeeta and son Omkar, was featured in the episode. The 300-person capacity movable hall has lighting, sound, and air conditioning. Since they began in January 2023, the trio has thrown over 40 events inside the transportable hall, which can be erected in any kind of terrain.
The hall, designed by Dayanand, a 12th pass, is situated atop a truck and, when in use, expands into a sizable enough area, as per Indian Express report.
Dayanand said that prior to becoming well-known in the madap decoration industry, he worked as a cleaner in Pune, sold vada pav, and drove an automobile. After switching to madap decoration, he began turning a profit of over Rs 1 crore. He has since invested nearly Rs 4 cr to launch the new portable hall business.?
During the episode, the Sharks then took a tour of the portable Mangal Karyalay, which has a rent of Rs 50,000 per day. ¡°Lag nahi raha hai truck mein hai,¡± Anupam Mittal said as they entered.?The founder revealed to the shark that the company's long-term goal is to have 900 trucks running in major cities in exchange for Rs 2 crore and 10% ownership. Despite its ambition, the set up had a few issues that the Sharks pointed out.
Though they were impressed by his risk-taking and fervor, the Sharks questioned whether he was being unduly ambitious by wanting to grow and add more trucks at this point instead of utilizing the one truck that was available to move it to high-demand areas and making improvements to the hall itself.
Anupam Mittal mentioned that he left the vada paav industry to work in marriage halls since they were more lucrative. However, he wouldn't have launched the same company in a different city if it hadn't been.??¡°You have been trying and investing in this for 8 years, and then started it last year where you averaged three and a half bookings a month. You are not ready to accept that there is no demand.
¡°For 8 years you put your heart, soul and your existence in it that now you are in love with the idea itself. Ye kis type ka deewanapan hai aapka ki aapne kaha main 900 trucks lagauga? Just think about it, may be refocus on your mandap business, earn that profit of Rs 1 cr, because if that grows, this business will grow as well,¡± he added.
