From College Dropout To Microsoft AI CEO: All About Mustafa Suleyman, Satya Nadella's New Hire
Mustafa Suleyman, a founder of Google's DeepMind, has joined Microsoft to head their new artificial intelligence division. He will be in charge of improving the usability of AI products for common users, such as Copilot, Bing, and Edge. Suleyman will oversee Microsoft's artificial intelligence division and report directly to Satya Nadella.
He's bringing along some friends from Inflection AI, the company he founded. Kar¨¦n Simonyan, one of them, created a product dubbed AlphaZero. Simonyan will oversee the scientific component of improving AI for human use. Some other folks, Mikhail Parakhin and Misha Bileno, who work on Copilot, Bing, and Edge, will now work for Suleyman.
Nadella says he's excited to have Suleyman on board because he knows him well and thinks he's great at making new things with AI. Microsoft wants to use AI to help everyone in the world safely and responsibly.
¡°I¡¯ve known Mustafa for several years and have greatly admired him as a founder of both DeepMind and Inflection, and as a visionary, product maker, and builder of pioneering teams that go after bold missions,¡± Nadella wrote in the memo.
Suleyman joined Google after the company acquired DeepMind in 2014. There, he has been working on significant AI projects. Then, in 2022, he founded Inflection AI, his own business. The reason Microsoft hired him is that, like OpenAI and other AI startups, they want to do more with AI.
Microsoft plans to continue working with OpenAI and developing innovative AI products even after creating this new AI team. Rajesh Jha and Kevin Scott will continue to lead Microsoft's AI initiatives. Sean White will become Inflection AI's new boss. Another founder of Inflection AI, Reid Hoffman, will continue to assist as well.

He was raised by an English mother who was a nurse and a Syrian father who operated taxis in London, where he was born in 1984. Suleyman came from humble beginnings; he left Oxford University to launch one of the largest phone counseling services for mental health support in the UK, specifically for Muslims.
To bring about significant organisational change, Suleyman founded Reos Partners in 2007. His company has partnerships with major institutions such as the World Wide Fund for Nature, the Netherlands government, and the United Nations.
Suleyman has served on The Economist Group's board since June 2019, though he is not a full-time employee of the company. His role is to provide counsel and make choices without taking charge of the operation.
He has experience resolving social issues and conflicts with the UN, WWF, and the Dutch government, among other organizations. He was a co-founder of DeepMind, an AI startup acquired by Google in 2014. He oversaw AI policy and product development at Google. One noteworthy achievement was reducing Google's data centers' energy consumption by 40% by utilizing DeepMind's technology.
In 2022, he teamed up with Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, to start Inflection AI. The company raised $1.5 billion and is now worth $4 billion, with big names like Microsoft, NVIDIA, Bill Gates, and Hoffman himself backing it. Suleyman also penned a New York Times and Sunday Times bestselling book, "The Coming Wave: Technology, Power, and the Twenty-first Century's Greatest Dilemma," translated into 32 languages.
