A shocking case of cybercrime surfaced in Bengaluru recently wherein an Infosys employee?was scammed by fraudsters and lost crores.
Fraudsters posing as representatives of the Mumbai police, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) threatened to arrest a senior Infosys executive and forced him to pay Rs 3.7 crore.?
The story began on November 21, when the Whitefield-based executive got a call claiming he was the subject of a money laundering investigation connected to his Aadhaar card details and that there was a criminal case at the Vakola police station in Mumbai. The victim was forced to move the large amount from his personal account to several bank accounts that the criminals had designated over the course of the next 48 hours, as per ET.

The victim reported that he received a call from an alleged TRAI officer accusing him of using a SIM card that was registered in his name to distribute illicit advertisements. Subsequently, the caller assumed the identity of a high-ranking Mumbai police officer and demanded, under duress, that the executive travel to Delhi and Mumbai for inquiries.?
A few men dressed in Khaki even answered a fictitious police station video call from cyber criminals, showing off their ID cards and a fictitious complaint. Then, between November 21 and 23, the victim was forced to transfer money to several bank accounts in order to allegedly avoid arrest and close the cases, as per the report.
On November 25, after realising he had been tricked, the victim reported the incident to the police. Later, in accordance with sections 419 and 420 of the IPC and the Information Technology Act, the Cyber Crime Police opened a case.?
Since the case involved more than Rs 3 crore in total, it was scheduled to be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). There were attempts to get bank employees to assist in freezing the criminals' accounts.The public has been cautioned by authorities not to answer these calls and to report them to the police right away after speaking with their attorneys.
