After a lot of back and forth over its release, Nawazuddin Siddiqui¡¯s much-talked about film Haddi finally saw the light of the day this week. A tale of murder and revenge, Haddi portrays Nawaz in the role of a trans woman who is on a quest to confront the one who has wronged her.
Director Akshat Ajay Sharma played with several elements in the entire duration of the movie which missed some targets but overall managed to bring out the full potential of both the protagonist Siddiqui and antagonist Anurag Kashyap.
The exhibition of brutality and violence is spine-chilling which makes the revenge saga even more riveting. Haddi seems effective in theory but once the film begins you can¡¯t help but notice the faulty writing which doesn¡¯t do justice to the plot. For starters, the setting up of the premise takes so long that it¡¯s hard not to get distracted and let it play in the background.
I, for one, was almost on the verge of giving up but thankfully, better sense prevailed as it took a complete 360 after forty minutes into the movie. Haddi becomes engaging after a while when the story becomes clearer. Nawaz as usual brought his A-game to the film but the surprise element is definitely filmmaker-turned-actor Anurag Kashyap. His evilness is so spine-chilling you can¡¯t wait for him to die a brutal death!
What is Haddi all about?
We are introduced to a fiery looking Nawaz, who is in the business of stealing dead bodies in Prayagraj. When the police raid several areas to bust this illegal business, Haddi decides to run to Delhi and meet Inder, a man who has powerful political connections including Pramod Ahlawat. Upon reaching Delhi, Haddi tries to win the trust of Inder and his men by murdering a police officer. They take him in and thus begins Haddi¡¯s dance of vengeance. Haddi becomes a vital part of Inder¡¯s bone-trafficking racket which could ultimately lead him to contest for the elections and be a part of the big world of politics. Pramod had promised Inder a party-ticket, in return for Rs 5 Crore. Once Haddi joins Inder's gang and his bone-trafficking business he gains confidence that he will be able to achieve the desired sum. Little did he know that Haddi had some other plan in place.
Haddi¡¯s intention was to break the gang and gain access to Pramod Ahlawat as he wanted to kill him!
Why Did Haddi Want To Kill Pramod?
A typical politician who does good deeds just to whitewash his image, Pramod was as evil a person as it can get. He pretended to be the good guy only for show. His reality comes crashing, when viewers are taken back in time.
Six months ago, Pramod and Inder along with their respective men brutally killed several transgenders including Amma, the head of a gharana which was Haddi¡¯s family. Haddi who was born as a man Hari always felt like a woman. Amma accepted him into her gharana and helped Hari undergo a sex change operation to become a trans woman.
After the surgery, Hari became Harika and married the love of her life Irfan played by Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub.
While the couple and their family was amid a celebration post their court wedding, Pramod ambushed them and massacred all the members of the gharana. Only Harika and Irfan survived as they were in hiding. It was then that Harika decided to avenge this brutality. She changed her appearance, left Irfan for his own safety and got into the inner circles of Pramod.
The evil man that Pramod was, he ordered his men to do a background check of Haddi.
While Haddi thought that he was smart, the cunning politician turned out to be one step ahead.
He got Haddi to kill Inder and then wanted him to work for him, dealing in children¡¯s corpses this time. When Haddi refused, Pramod shot Haddi and Irfan both. Just when we are contemplating if Haddi will survive or not, Haddi makes a comeback in a brand new avatar.
Harika, or Haddi, turns out to be invincible, and fights Pramod. He is finally killed and it sends shockwaves across the nation.
Did Harika become a politician?
As per the post-credit scene, Haddi aka Harika is shown sitting at a desk, cutting a powerful picture. The only explanation can be that Harika must have contested the elections and won with the support of the trans community. After successfully exacting revenge, she is likely to dedicate her life to the upliftment and welfare of the trans community.
Haddi is available to stream on Zee5.
