No Season 2 For Paatal Lok? Anurag Kashyap Reveals Why The Much-Awaited Series Is Put On Hold

Recently, Anurag Kashyap, made headlines for his explanation of the postponement of Sacred Games 3.

Now, in keeping with that, the director has disclosed that Paatal Lok, another highly regarded series, has also been put on hold.

In a conversation with The Lallantop, he said, ¡°It¡¯s written, but we¡¯re figuring out the next steps. Netflix was supposed to do it earlier, but they aren¡¯t doing it any more. The project had been green-lit, but a lot has changed since then on streaming. Lots of projects have stalled, like Paatal Lok season two¡­¡±

The filmmaker claimed that all of this occurred after Tandav's early 2021 release, and debate arose over one particular scene. Prime Video altered the sequence after several police complaints were made against the show's creator, Ali Abbas Zafar, and its cast.

Anurag continued, ¡°There have been leadership changes and policy changes at streaming companies. There was a show called Gormint which never came out. A lot has changed, and we¡¯ve suffered because of it, on health and otherwise.¡±

Back when Paatal Lok was released, Anurag was one of those who could not stop praising the show. Post which he tweeted, ¡°My filmmaker¡¯s heart is full of joy. I just saw PAATAAL LOK. The best crime thriller I have seen to come out of this country in the longest time, maybe forever.¡±

He added, ¡°It is not just a great investigative thriller. It comes from the understanding of Real India. The dark heart of India, the communal and casteist India. But it doesn¡¯t judge it, it comes from empathy. It¡¯s a game-changer for sure. It finds humanity in its darkest heart. It shows us the large gap between the rural and urban India. Extremely well written, shot performed. It makes you realise, that only those who see and understand this large gap between the two India¡¯s, will wield power over it.¡±

About Paatal Lok:

The protagonist of the programme is cynical cop Hathiram Chowdhary (Jaideep Ahlawat), who is given the task of looking into a high-profile crime. He is drawn into the murkier areas of the underworld as a result of becoming involved in the inquiry. The storyline of Paatal Lok, which is set in East Delhi, Delhi, is based on traditional ideas of Svarga, Dharti, and Paatal (heaven, earth, and hell), which are metaphors for the various classes of India and the four estates.

With the Netflix original series Sacred Games, which he co-directed with Vikramaditya Motwane and Neeraj Ghaywan, Anurag made his directorial debut. Additionally, he was the director of Netflix's Choked: Paisa Bolta Hai. A third season of Sacred Games was planned, but Netflix decided against it, the director stated in a recent visit on Mashable India's The Bombay Journey YouTube series.
