As per the official logline the sequel takes place roughly five years in the future. Joel's brother lives in a kind of colony near Jackson, Wyoming, where Ellie and Joel have traveled. Although the reasons for Ellie's anger with Joel aren't revealed until much later in the narrative, you can certainly assume that they have to do with the mystery surrounding their abrupt departure from Salt Lake.
