Deepak Tijori lost Maine Pyar Kiya To Salman Khan because of looks
Tijori himself revealed that Barjatya called him and told him that Salman's look impressed the "women in the family" and since it was a romantic movie they were going ahead with Khan.
"He called me and told me that we saw both the auditions, we¡¯ve loved both of you. (He explained) why we are going for Salman Khan is because the women of the family, they have adored Salman¡¯s looks more than you, though they find as actors, both of you were competent. But because this is a love story, we need that romance. It was totally justified," he told Bollywood Hungama.
Tijori agrees that Salman was the perfect choice for the role and has no regrets at all. He in fact said, "Main nahi ban sakta tha" when asked if his career would have taken a different turn had he played the character. However, he regrets not being able to do Baazigar.

Sooraj Barjatya in conversation with Anupam Kher had once revealed that Salman had auditioned for the lead role in Maine Pyar Kiya. The makers didn't give him a confirmation for six months, and on the other side, Salman kept sending other names to Barjatya for the same role. One of them was Deepak Tijori.

Tijori and Salman were two people competing for the role of Prem
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Tijori who was seen in Akshay Kumar-starrer Khiladi said, "Yes. Salman Khan and I auditioned for it. I was competing. Sooraj Barjatya later told me that after watching the rushes, the Barjatya family decided to go ahead with Salman Khan. Salman and I were the only two people who were competing for the role of Prem, neck-to-neck."
