What is Hashimoto¡¯s disease? Know symptoms and causes
Hashimoto¡¯s disease is an autoimmune disorder that leads to hypothyroidism, which is an underactive thyroid. This means that people suffering from this condition have their own immune system attacking the thyroid gland, which in turn causes inflammation as well as damage. This, in turn, reduced the thyroid's ability to produce essential hormones, which regulate energy use and impact other bodily functions including heart rate. Hashimoto¡¯s can sometimes also result in hyperthyroidism or an overactive thyroid.
This condition is more commonly seen in women than men and usually develops between the ages of 30 to 50. The chances of having it increase based on the family history. The diseases cause several health problems including diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease among others. The causes include fatigue, weight gain, joint or muscle pain, dry skin, constipation, hair thinning, and heavy or irregular menstrual periods among others.
