All You Need To Know About The Legal Case Against Amitabh Bachchan And Flipkart's Misleading Ad
CAIT files a complaint against Flipkart for its misleading ad featuring Amitabh Bachchan. Here's all you need to know about the case.
Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has served the entertainment industry for over five decades now. The actor has starred in over 220 films and appeared in numerous commercials over the years. One of which is now the trending talk of the town.
Amitabh Bachchan¡¯s latest commercial with Flipkart faces a legal flak.
The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has lodged a complaint with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs against an ad run by e-commerce giant Flipkart featuring Big B. The advertisement promotes Flipkart¡¯s upcoming Big Billion Days sale and has been termed 'misleading' by CAIT.
The complaint causes harm to small retailers through loose claims.
In the complaint submitted to the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), CAIT shared its concerns over the ad's misleading nature saying that it aims against the interests of small retailers in India¡¯s current market. CAIT has requested the immediate withdrawal of the ad as mentioned in an official statement.
CAIT calls for penalties against Amitabh Bachchan and Flipkart.
CAIT has mentioned relevant provisions of the Consumer Protection Act citing 'false or misleading advertisement.' In addition to this, the traders' body demanded a Rs 10 lakh fine on Amitabh Bachchan for endorsing such a commercial. Neither Flipkart nor Amitabh has reacted to the controversy yet.

CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal in a statement said, "As per the definition under Section 2(47), Flipkart, acting through Amitabh Bachchan (the endorser), have misled the public regarding the price at which mobile phones are being made available by sellers/suppliers in the smartphone market of India. This has the effect of disparaging the goods, services, or trade of another person."
Khandelwal further mentioned Rule 4 of the Guidelines for Prevention of Misleading Advertisements and Endorsements for Misleading Advertisements, 2022 and said that the Flipkart advertisement "is misleading because it doesn't contain truthful and honest representation and is wholly incorrect, malicious, misleading, and manipulative."
It was just last week that CAIT questioned Flipkart's Big Billion Day sale claiming that consumers will not be able to get any mobile deals offline at retail stores.
The Big Billion Days will go live from October 8 to 15.
On the work front, Amitabh will be next seen in Ganapath, Kalki 2898 AD, The Umesh Chronicles and Butterfly. Last year, he had some of the massive releases including Brahmastra, Goodbye, Uunchai, Chup, Runway 34 and Jhund. He is currently hosting his game show KBC 15.
