Karan Johar often faces a lot of heat for nepotism and has been trolled on the same on more than one occasions. It all began when Kangana Ranaut tagged him as the 'Flagbearer of Nepotism' when she appeared as a guest in his show, Koffee With Karan.

She also praised Karan Johar and said that even though he gets a lot of heat for nepotism, he did take her in when she was a nobody.
Kiara said, "I do feel that certain people who¡¯ve reached great heights in their fields, they don¡¯t have to live up to this social norm¡ So, there¡¯s this thing like, ¡®Let¡¯s be exclusive as a brand, let¡¯s not give everyone¡¯, because even as actors, you don¡¯t want to wear what everybody is wearing. Now it¡¯s become international stuff, all that nonsense goes on.
¡°At that point, there was this thing, and Manish is one of those people who never looked at it like that. He never looked at it like, ¡®I¡¯ll give somebody something because they¡¯re successful¡¯. Even Karan. I know he gets so much hate for nepotism and all of that, but he took me when I was a nobody, and nobody told him to.¡±

He was questioned on why Kartik Aryan was casted in the film instead of Akshay Kumar. Responding to this, the director had said, "Akshay is a great actor and a great friend. Vidya is a great actor and did very well (in Bhool Bhulaiyaa). But the script didn¡¯t give us the liberty to bring them on board."
