Who is Vinayak Damodar Savarkar aka Veer Savarkar?
Randeep Hooda says he was the most misunderstood unsung hero.
"There are many heroes that have played their part in getting us our Independence. However, not everyone has got their due. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar is the most misunderstood, debated and influential of these unsung heroes and his story must be told," he said.
Savarkar, as shown in the teaser, believed that India's freedom struggle would be cut short had people followed the path of armed revolution. He wrote The Indian War of Independence about the 1857 revolt against British forces in India. The book was seen as highly inflammatory and was banned in British India even before its publication.
The father of Hindutva
Hailed as the father of Hindutva Vinayak Damodar Savarkar had joined Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha. He focussed on Hindutva, a term which was coined by Bengali conservative Chandranath Basu.
His arrest
Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was arrested for protest against 1909 Morley-Minto reforms and was sentenced to 50 years of imprisonment at the notorious Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, also called Kaala Pani. He was released in 1924.
A traitor?
Savarkar had signed to be "pardoned" by the British in 1921. He promised to stay away from politics and revolutionary activities upon his release. Some people call him a traitor and slave of the British Raj due to his mercy petitions. Others, on the other hand, say he didn't seek his own release but the release of other political prisoners.
Savarkar wrote in My Transportation for Life, "Release us, I said, equip India with colonial self-government, and win the loyalty and love of her people. That would assure to the government all the co-operation that it needed from the people in the present crisis. Let it not miss that splendid opportunity. In case the Government suspected, I wrote in conclusion, my motive in writing the letter, I offered to do without any release for myself personally. Let them release all the political prisoners in the country leaving me alone in my own cell in the Andamans. I shall rejoice in their freedom as if it was my own."
Was he behind the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi?
In 1948, Savarkar was charged as a co-conspirator in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. However, he was acquitted by the court for lack of evidence.
