1813 - Perry defeats the British

On September 10, 1813, an American naval force commanded by Oliver H. Perry defeated the British in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. (Afterward, Perry sent the message, ¡°We have met the enemy and they are ours.¡±)

1846 - Sewing Machine Patent Model

While working as a journeyman machinist, Elias Howe Jr. wrestled for years to find a way to mechanize sewing. With the family pinched by poverty, his wife sewed for others by hand at home. Watching her sew, Howe visualized ways to mechanize the process. In 1845, he built his first sewing machine and soon constructed an improved model, which he carried to the Patent Office in Washington to apply for a patent. He received the fifth United States patent (No. 4,750) for a sewing machine in 1846.

1897 - The World¡¯s First Drunk Driving Arrest Was Made On This Day

On this day, September 10, in the year 1897, the UK police made the world¡¯s first-ever arrest on charges of ¡®drunken driving¡¯ in London. A 25-year-old taxi driver named George Smith was arrested by the cops after he met with an accident due to intoxication.

George smashed his car into the building as the police were summoned on the scene, they suspected him drunk and made an arrest. Until then, the breathalyzer had not been developed, and neither the UK had passed a law against drunk driving that prohibited the motor operation under the influence of alcohol. The police made an arrest citing a possible mishap, averted, while the ¡®drunk driver¡¯ may well have injured somebody on the road, according to several reports.

1977 - Last Person to be Executed in France

On September 10, 1977, Hamida Djandoubi was guillotined and became both the last person executed in France as well as the last person executed by beheading in the Western world, and by any means in Western Europe.
