What is Norovirus?
Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines and is the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide, according to a study published in the National Library of Medicine. The virus is known for causing a sudden onset of diarrhoea and severe vomiting. While the infections are limiting and resolve within a few days, they can easily turn severe and serious in people with weakened or compromised immune systems including young children and the elderly.
What are the symptoms of Norovirus?
Symptoms start appearing 12-48 hours after exposure and can last up close to 24-72 hours, with recovery depending upon the health of the patient's immune system, according to the Mayo Clinic. The symptoms include severe diarrhoea, nausea, intense and frequent vomiting, dehydration, abdominal cramps, high fever accompanied by chills and fatigue and body aches.

How does Norovirus spread?
Norovirus thrives in areas with poor hygiene and sanitation and primarily spreads through contaminated food, water, or surfaces. It can also spread through close person-to-person contact with an infected individual like sharing their items or even shaking their hands. Additionally, since the virus is so contagious aerosolized particles containing the virus have a strong chance of becoming airborne and infecting others when inhaled.
Norovirus preventive tips
Norovirus can be easily prevented by practising strict hygiene measures.
- The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases suggests maintaining good hand hygiene by washing them frequently with soap and water is the best way to protect yourself and others from norovirus.
