11 Horror Movies That Cannot Be Missed In 2020

Among so many things people are expecting from 2020, there's plenty of good entertainment horror fans are pumped about too. And they should be given that this year's roster has some truly terrifying movies. Whether it's the supernatural that interests you, deep-sea journeys gone wrong or monsters in the attic, this assorted list has something for everyone.

1. Underwater

Release: January

If you can keep an open mind and ignore the fact that Kirsten Stewart's starring in the main role, this creature feature seems pretty promising. Give me a mysterious creature chilling miles underwater and a group of smug explorers who need that last gig, anytime. This is the oldest plot in deep-sea exploration/sci-Fi/horror universe and it'll never get old. Thanks, Abyss. On similar lines, is Underwater where a team goes underwater--seven miles into the ocean--and while on there, the rig starts to crack... because when they reached the bottom of the ocean something else decided to come up.

2. Antlers

Release: April 17

Antlers is based on novelist and screenwriter Nick Antosca's short horror story 'The quiet boy.' Guillermo del Toro is one of the producers of the film and no horror film can ask for a bigger endorsement. The story follows a little boy secretly feeding a creature in the attic. He feeds it anything he finds including dead animals. That is until one day the creature escapes, leaving behind a bloody trail.

3. The Invisible Man

Release: February

The Handmaid's Tale (okay, and Mad Men's) Elizabeth Moss stars in The Invisible Man, a seemingly gripping movie in which her 'sociopath' husband's ghost figures out a way to follow her wherever she goes, even after he's long gone. Soon after she escapes their terrible and violent marriage, she learns of his sudden death. He had slit his wrists. But being manipulative even in death, her unnamed (so far) husband left $5 million in her name, with the caveat that she prove she's mentally stable. What follows is a series of episodes where his ghost stalks her to the point of driving her insane. Like one character says in the trailer, "He's found the perfect way to torture you even in death." This film is loosely based on the popular H.G. Wells novel of the same name where science and morality butt heads.

4. Fantasy Island

Release: February 14

Fantasy Island as the name suggests brings together strangers who can live out their fantasies. But the organisers never specified that some instances would include nightmares or torturing real people. The woman who meets them upon arrival promises that on this island 'anything is possible.' Not much later she adds the rather ominous line: 'Your life is about to change. I hope you're ready.' What takes place next is a whole series of nightmares come to life. It's almost as if they're starring in someone else's sick fantasy. This one's nothing to write home about, but it seems like it'll make the cut when some truly senseless, fast-paced entertainment is what your horror-deprived brain needs.

5. Color Out Of Space

Release: January 24*

This film's biggest selling point is that it's based on H.P. Lovecraft's sci-fi-horror story of the same name. It's literally a slice of space horror on earth. After a meteor crashes in a family's¡ªin which Nicholas Cage is papa bear, no less¡ªbackyard, weird things begin to happen. Whatever came with the meteor slowly begins to not only take over the entire landscape but also the minds and bodies of the family. They suffer from strong hallucinations that are dripping in a strange colour that eventually forms the backdrop for every bad happening in the movie.

6. The Turning

Release: January 24

If you've read Henry James' The Turn of the Screw, said to be one of the scariest books ever written, then The Turning, you'll realise, is the first modern attempt to bring it to life on the big screen. In the movie, as in the book, a woman is hired as a nanny for two children who for some strange reason reside in an aging and very goth castle, which, surprise, has rooms where 'you're not allowed to go.' It's the classic supernatural setting: kids who behave strangely, animals that die for no apparent reason, everyone's super calm behaviour despite eerie happenings and an overall grim mood. If the novella had you turning pages, this movie will be a nice garnish.

7. Antebellum

Release: April 24

Veronica Henley (Janelle Mon¨¢e) is a successful author enjoying life's generous offerings. That is until the day she finds herself in a situation she can't seem to get out of. The two adjacent timelines finally collide to give the movie a fitting end. There's plenty of mystery, suspense and moving imagery that might just make this one a movie worth watching.

8. Gretel & Hansel

Release: January 30

For anyone who grew up reading the German fairy tale horror story from Brothers Grimm will first notice how the Hansel and Gretel's names have switched places in the movie title. 'The story you know well,' gets another modern facelift and much to everyone's pleasure, it's as dark as it gets. Actor Alice Krige¡ªa familiar face from 1992's Sleepwalkers and the relatively recent Silent Hill¡ªplays Holdathe terrifying witch in this movie, a perfect choice if you were to ask me. The story seems familiar from the outset but powerful imagery soon overpowers a seemingly vanilla tale about siblings lost in the woods. And speaking of visual allegory, the movie borrows plenty of it from the original Brother Grimm tale that was, in fact, not a fairy tale. You'll be holding on to the edge of your seats with this one.

9. The Lodge

Release: February 7

Initially meant to release in the fall of 2019, this one got a revised release date. The Lodge follows the story of a woman who agrees to watch her fiance's kids over the weekend. The setting, a lone cabin in a vast expanse of snow, creates a growing feeling of isolation that begins to gnaw at the viewer. Inside the cabin, things begin to deteriorate too. First, the electricity goes out then the protagonist's things go missing and the kids soon start hearing voices. There's no chance of escape given the raging snowstorm on the outside. The only choice left is to live the nightmare. Imagine cabin fever on steroids.

10. Saint Maud

Release: March 27

Saint Maud is rife with the themes of life and death, of sin and salvation, religion and the human soul. In this movie, a young nurse named Maud whose job it is to take care of a patient begins to slowly believe she can save said patient's soul. This is the same studio that gave us The Witch and Midsommar so one thing's for sure: It's not going to be a complete downer.

11. A Quiet Place: Part II

Release: March 20

The Abbott family's search for a safe haven continues in the second chapter of A Quiet Place. What they soon realise is that four-legged aliens aren't the only threat and being nimble-footed not the only way out. As humanity turns on itself, everyone soon learns that 'the only people left are not the people worth saving.' It's going to be a bummer not seeing John Krasinski this time round (look ma, no spoilers) but something tells me Emily Blunt will do a fantastic job taking on the mantle.
