Shocking! How Low Can We Get? 19-Year-Old Mumbai Girl Travelling Alone Raped By Three Men In Two Separate Incidents Within Two Hours

Travelling alone, especially at night is one of the riskiest things in India for women. This is true even in the metro cities.

Now a shocking crime has emerged from Mumbai where a woman was sexually abused by three men, in two separate incidents.

The incident happened on the night of February 19 in Navi Mumbai.

According to the police, the victim, a 19-year-old girl had to take a train at suburban Ghatkopar on February 18 while she was with her relatives. But after she failed to board the train, she took another one and reached Mumbra railway station in Thane district on the night and slept at the station.

¡°On February 19, she boarded another train and reached Diva station where she requested a woman beggar to help her in selling her nose ring for money. However, they couldn¡¯t sell the ring till night,¡± a police officer said.

The woman then started walking the road with the hope to locate the Diva railway station and asked the auto driver to drop her at the nearest railway station.

The auto-driver, however, took her to a dilapidated building in Navi Mumbai and raped her,¡± the officer said, adding that the accused left the woman near a temple in the area. The woman then sought the help of two men who were riding a scooter in locating a nearby station, he said. ¡°The duo made her sit on the two-wheeler, took her to an isolated area near Ghansoli and raped her,¡± the officer said.

Based on the girl's complaint the police have arrested the three accused, including the auto driver.

According to the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) the annual crime report released by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the country reported almost 34,000 rapes in 2018. That is one rape reported every 15 minutes on an average in India.

With a total of 31,979 cases of crime against women reported in the state in 2018, Maharashtra was the second most unsafe in India, after Uttar Pradesh.

As far as metro cities are concerned Mumbai had recorded a total of 6058 crimes against women in the same time period.

Mumbai had reported 5,453 similar cases, Bengaluru 3,565 cases while Kolkata had 1,975 cases in 2017. The report shows that in cities, the crime against women cases had increased since 2015.

As far as all crimes are concerned, a total of 2,25,977 incidents of crime were reported in the national capital in 2018, followed by Mumbai (40,757), Chennai (20,160) and Kolkata (19,682 incidents of crime).
