Anand Mahindra hails BMC for cleaning up Marine Drive, a day after Team India's victory parade
More than 100 staffers of the civic solid waste management department and members of NGOs got to work on Thursday night itself, and by Friday morning, 10-12 metric tonnes of trash were collected from the iconic promenade after the event.
The victory parade of ICC T20 World Cup 2024 winners, Team India, on Mumbai's iconic Marine Drive on Thursday was unlike anything the country had seen in a very long time. Lakhs of ardent cricket fans converged at Marine Drive and marched to the Wankhede Stadium to catch a glimpse of the world champions and be a part of the celebrations.
Marine Drive turns garbage dump
But once the party was over, Marine Drive was turned into a massive pile of garbage, thanks to the sea of slippers, food wrappers, plastic bottles, and other waste left behind by the cricket fans. Thankfully, it wasn't left there for long as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) got to work swiftly.

10-12 metric tonnes trash
More than 100 staffers of the civic solid waste management department and members of NGOs got to work on Thursday night itself, and by Friday morning, 10-12 metric tonnes of trash were collected from the iconic promenade after the event. Dumpers that carry around three tonnes of trash, compactors with a capacity of six tonnes, and small vehicles that can accommodate 500 kilograms were used to clear the area.
The trash mainly consisted of plastic bottles, food wrappers, and cups, as well as shoes, slippers, and some other items. While the dry waste has been mostly collected from Marine Drive, shoes and chappals, which were collected in five small vehicles, will be sent for recycling.
