India Is Turning Hell For Elephants As 429 Jumbos Have Been Killed By Poachers In Just 10 Years

The RTI, filed by Noida-based lawyer Ranjan Tomar to seek state-wise data on the number of elephants killed by poachers in the last 10 years and offenders arrested, showed that Kerala (136) had registered the most elephant deaths during this period.
West Bengal (48), Karnataka (46), Tamil Nadu (44) and Odisha (41) were the other states that had registered significant number of elephant deaths.

Not even a single elephant death was registered from Bihar, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Sikkim, Telangana, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli in the same period, while Tripura recorded only one elephant killing by poachers.

The data has also showed that the number of elephants poached have come down significantly in the ten years from 53 in 2008 to only five in 2018, all five in Assam.
"The data shows the number of elephants killed by poachers has been coming down, particularly during the last four-five years, which is a good indication," Tomar told PTI.
